The Erstwhile Tyler Kyle, SPFBO, and Returning to Qemassen
Welcome back to Qemassen (and to several new places)!
It’s been a hot minute since my last update. I’ll admit, I’m not the best at keeping up with newsletters (including, as it turns out, my own).
A lot has happened, but two of the most exciting things are that I’ve published The Wings of Ashtaroth as an eBook and that my new queer horror comedy is up for pre-order and is downloadable as a free eARC (advance reader copy).
For subscribers, I’m happy to offer a free epub of The Wings of Ashtaroth on Bookfunnel.
You can sign up for a free eARC of The Erstwhile Tyler Kyle here.
If you’d like to support, you can also purchase TWoA, or pre-order TETK (more merchants available soon).
THE WINGS OF ASHTAROTH AND SPFBO
One of the biggest pieces of news is that this May I entered TWoA in Mark Lawrence’s self-published fantasy contest—the Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off. As of this writing, I’m still in the competition, but the closer we come to October, the more books are being cut.
There’s a great batch of books in this year’s contest and I highly recommend checking them out! Self-published author Zack Argyle has created a gorgeous website showing off all the covers.
Aside from entering SPFBO, I’m also preparing to start serializing TWoA’s direct sequel, The Crown of Asmodeus. I’ve already posted an interim chapter from Oran’s perspective on my Patreon, and I’ll be posting it for free in the usual places in the week’s to come.
You can get a sneak peak at the cover and a short excerpt from two of our returning characters below!
“Fine, sulk.” Bree shivered as the river wind tickled her back, but the fresh air was welcome, and she smiled to herself. “Men all think themselves so different, but you're just the same. Bearing your souls to the first woman who'll stand there and listen. I have my own stories—I don't need yours too.”
“Then why don't you regale me with one of yours?” Samelqo asked dryly.
“You'd have to ask nicely,” Bree snapped back. “And I'm not sure you know how.”
I’ve got some new POVs lined up for the book, including Yakov’s daughter Priscilla, and Eshant. Stay tuned for more character reveals!
THE ERSTWHILE TYLER KYLE
This September I also finally made my break with traditional publishing (or, *ahem*, put differently, I’ve decided to stop trying to get traditionally published).
Doing so has given me the freedom to release more of my work, and I’m especially excited to be releasing my queer horror comedy with Buzzfeed Unsolved / Ghost Files and Twin Peaks vibes on October, Friday 13th (just in time for spooky season)!
Dan Fitzgerald with Before We Go Blog was kind enough to host my cover reveal, where you can learn more about the book. Below you’ll find some
Here’s the blurb, followed by a book trailer and a small static advertisement!
Blurb for The Erstwhile Tyler Kyle
Tyler Kyle doesn't believe in monsters.
A washed-up thirty-year-old actor and reluctant cryptid investigator, Tyler is used to playing the Scully to his best friend Josh's Mulder on their stupidly popular YouTube channel. But when Tyler receives previously unseen footage of the B movie bombshell mother who abandoned him eighteen years ago—footage linked to an isolated island in the Canadian wilderness—the mystery is one conspiracy he's determined to investigate. The fact that following the scent gives Tyler an excuse to run away from the "straight" Josh, whom he drunkenly made out with, is just the cherry on the shit sundae.
But Echo Island isn't what it seems. Somewhere amongst its pine-clad hills lurks the stalker whose footage lured him to the island in the first place, and behind its eerily scenic veneer hides a twisted secret buried in its roots as a gay conversion camp. As Tyler retraces his mother's footsteps, he discovers a supernatural connection the residents share with the island—one that calls to Tyler the same way it did his mother.
Face-to-face with the supernatural, he sure-as-shit wishes he hadn't gay-panicked and left the cryptid-obsessed Josh behind. Pursued by the stalker, searching for his mother, and debating whether it's possible to queerbait yourself, Tyler comes to realize that it doesn't matter so much whether you believe in monsters, if they believe in you.
THE ERSTWHILE TYLER KYLE is an adult horror comedy for fans of GHOST FILES, BUZZFEED UNSOLVED, and TWIN PEAKS.
